To refine equipment in Evony, open a general, tap the gear piece, choose View, then press Refine. Refining improves a general’s gear with additional stat buffs. Every attempt spends Refining Stones and Gold, so choosing the right gear, stat targets and timing protects a limited resource.
This guide explains what each gear piece refines, where the stones come from and why the Super Refining Event is the best time to use them.

How do you refine equipment in Evony?
Refine from the general’s equipment screen in four steps. You can also refine from the Forge: choose Craft, then the Refine tab.
- Open the gear piece. Tap a general, select the equipment piece and tap View.
- Press Refine. The screen shows the piece’s 4 buff slots and the Refining Stones and Gold one attempt costs.
- Refine, then confirm or cancel. Each attempt rolls new random buffs and values. Confirm to keep the new roll or cancel to keep the old one.
- Lock what you want to keep. Tap the padlock next to a good buff so the next refine leaves it alone. Each lock adds a gem cost to every attempt, so be picky before you lock.
What does refining actually do to your gear?
Refining adds stat buffs to a general’s gear. The available stat categories depend on the gear piece, which means a weapon and helmet cannot refine the same collection of bonuses.
Each piece has 4 refine slots. Those slots let one item carry several buffs from its allowed categories. Decide which stats support the general’s job before spending stones, especially when random rolls can pull the piece away from your intended build.
Every refinement costs Refining Stones plus Gold, and higher-tier gear costs more of both. Repeated attempts can consume stones quickly, so the useful question is whether the result helps the specific build you are making.
Keep the general’s purpose clear while choosing refinements. A combat build, gathering build and subordinate-city build need different bonuses, even when they use the same gear slots.
Which stat does each piece of gear refine?
Weapons and rings roll attack, helmets and leg armor roll HP, and armor and boots roll defense. The rest of each list is gathering, march, load or subordinate-city bonuses.

Use the table to narrow your target before you start. If a general needs attack, focus on the weapon and ring. If the job depends on gathering speed or subordinate-city bonuses, check which pieces can roll those stats and refine those pieces first.
A focused target also makes random results easier to judge. Keep refinements that support the chosen role and avoid spending stones without a clear result in mind.
Where do you get Refining Stones?
Bosses and their chests are the steady source. Alliance gifts, events, the Black Market and packages add more.
Lava Turtle, Golem, Witch, Warlord, Hydra and Ymir always drop a chest, and those chests always contain Refining Stones. Normal bosses from the level 1 Zombie to the level 11 Ifrit drop stones at random. Event bosses such as Cerberus and Nian can drop them too.
Several other chests also contain stones. These include Lucky Boxes and the Royal Chest you get for defeating 3 Royal Thieves. Check the contents of chest rewards instead of assuming every stone must come directly from a boss drop.
Alliance gifts provide another source. Active alliance play can add stones alongside the rewards collected from boss fights and chests.
The Black Market, event rewards and packages can also supply Refining Stones. At VIP 13 the Black Market adds a repurchase option, which our Evony VIP guide covers. Event rewards are especially useful because they can support the same refining cycle in which you plan to spend your existing stones.

What is the Super Refining Event, and why wait for it?
The Super Refining Event, also called the Refining Stone Consuming Return Event, is a rotating event found in the Valuable Events tab. It usually lasts about 6 days, giving players a defined window for planned refining.
During the event, spending 1 Refining Stone converts into 1 Event Point. The same refinement still improves gear, but the event also credits the stone toward its reward system.
Players can earn milestone rewards, use the event shop and compete for Top 10 or Top 50 ranking rewards. The available reward paths give every stone spent during the window extra event value.
Refining outside the event gives up that free point value. Save stones between event windows, prepare your target gear and spend after the Super Refining Event appears in the Valuable Events tab.
Before spending, review the gear piece and the stats it can refine. This keeps the event from turning into a series of random attempts made only to generate points.

What is Advanced Refining in Evony?
Advanced Refining adds a fifth attribute to Civilization Equipment. It opens once all four refining attributes on a piece of Civilization Equipment reach Gold.
The extra attribute is refined separately with Gold and Refining Stones, and your other refines do not change it. Treat it as late-game spending, since all four normal slots must reach Gold first.
What mistakes waste the most Refining Stones?
Most wasted stones come from poor timing or an unclear gear plan. Avoid these common mistakes before starting a refining session.
- Refining outside the Super Refining Event window and receiving no Event Points for the stones spent.
- Refining temporary or low-tier gear instead of saving stones for endgame gear.
- Chasing random stat rolls without choosing a target build for the general first.
- Spreading stones across several gear pieces at once instead of finishing one piece before moving to the next.
- Forgetting to claim milestone, event shop or ranking rewards before the Super Refining Event ends.
